A Guide to Troop 73
We believe strongly in the ideals embodied in the Scout Law, the Scout Oath, the Scout Motto, the Scout Slogan and the Outdoor Code. We believe that these few simple words are the essence of profound thought from histories Great Civilizations. That these simple ideas can be used to define an individual and allow himself to live his life with honor and integrity. To be well rounded and prepared, and to be committed to family, community, to one’s faith and to one’s nation. To be dedicated to the cheerful service of others.
We also believe in fun! Lots of it! Everything from flying airplanes and helicopter rides to building and launching rockets to exploring and sleeping in caves to riding in authentic steam locomotives from the 19th century. Our definition of adventure is scaling down a canyon wall, canoes trips down a river, snow boarding down a mountain, cross county skiing or driving a team of dogs through a snow covered forest and even sleeping under a parachute in 3 degree weather. Yes, our Scouts have done all these things.
Adventure is our middle name.
If you’re familiar with Cub Scouts, this is nothing like it. The Scouts run the Troop, not the adults. The Scouts decide which outdoor events to the schedule, decide which merit badges to earn and they decide which service projects to undertake. We believe strongly in the Patrol Method, the heart of Scouting, where the boys work together in teams, learning to work together, accept individual and team responsibility and to exercise responsible leadership.
Adult leaders and parents are there to provide mentoring, guidance, logistical and financial support. Our role, as adult leaders, is to support the boys as they grow in exercising their leadership and planning skills, and to make available to them as many opportunities for advancement, service and adventure as possible. But don’t take this wrong, the adults have a plenty of fun as well. After all we get to drive the Scouts to all this action and we get to participate as well.
Anyone is welcome to any meeting any week of the year. Either as a Webelos looking for the next big step along the Scout Path, a parent looking for a venue to show their son more to life than school and video games, or even that “older guy” looking for something better than just “hanging out.”
Any interested family, or boy, is always encouraged to join us on one of our many weekend outings, just to see if our Troop is right for them.
